1. True Zero Hook

The “True zero” hook feature will allow you to measure without worrying about hook thickness. People will often think this is a tape measure defect. But the true zero hook feature is intentionally built into the measuring tape.

The metal hook at the end of a tape measure is exactly 1/16″ thick and is designed to move back and forth and is a bit loose on purpose. This isn’t a defect; it’s so that the hook will give you accurate readings whether you’re measuring inside or outside edges.

If you are measuring the outside edge of a surface, the metal hook will shift to create a small gap. This will prevent you from including the 1/16″ into your measurement.

2. Scribing Tool

The metal hook on a measuring tape has a serrated edge which can be used to score a mark on a piece of wood or drywall, allowing you to mark without a pencil.

The serrated edge is opposite of the hook’s main gripping side and is intentionally designed into the measuring tape and serves the specific purpose of scoring a mark.

As mentioned above, I have a personal favorite feature of a measuring tape. Although all of the items mentioned in this article are great, the standout feature is my favorite.

The standout feature refers to the maximum length the tape can extend horizontally before it bends, which is a sign of the tape’s strength and rigidity. Higher-quality tapes can stand out more, making measuring long spans easier.

How many times have you measured a longer length only to have the measuring tape bend and retract? As someone who does a lot of measuring, I can tell you I appreciate having a quality measuring tape that will measure longer lengths without bending.

If you are working alone, you will really enjoy having this feature. It can be very frustrating and sometimes impossible to measure long lengths with a poor quality measuring tape. If two people are working on a project, it’s not as much of a concern if the tape bends.

4. Stud / Floor Joist Markings

Many tape measures have small black diamonds or red squares every 16 inches or 19.2 inches, which align with the standard spacing for studs in wall construction.

Stud markings are provided to help users quickly identify the standard locations of studs in a wall. In the United States, for example, wall studs are typically placed 16 inches apart, center to center.

Some structures or specific walls might use a 24-inch spacing, and occasionally, for special purposes, there is an alternative 19.2-inch spacing.

5. Micrometer

A micrometer is a type of screw gauge. As with calipers, a micrometer can measure the thickness or diameter of an object. However, it offers greater precision and is mostly used with small objects.

A micrometer offers accurate measurements within one-thousandth of an inch. It is very precise and useful for measuring very small items, such as screws and smaller pipes or valves.

You may also use a micrometer to measure the wall thickness of pipes. If the anvil on the outer edge of the frame can fit inside the pipe, the micrometer can provide an accurate measurement of its thickness.

6. Manometer

A manometer is another device for measuring pressure. However, unlike a normal pressure gauge, a differential manometer measures the difference in pressure between two separate areas.

For example, you may use a manometer to measure the difference in pressure between two arms connected to the same pipe or two points within the same pipe. Pressure differences can indicate clogs, blockage, and leaks.

Plumbers also use manometers to assess the pressure level of plumbing systems. For example, a manometer may be used to analyze the pressure level from a sink faucet or shower faucet experiencing low pressure.

7. Depth Gauge

A depth gauge measures the depth of holes and recesses. These tools are sometimes called depth micrometers, as they offer precision measurements. Most depth gauges include a base that sits on the surface of the object that you want to measure the depth of.

A rod or plunger extends from the base. The depth gauge reads the depth of the rod or plunger. Depth gauges are also used with chamfer tools. A chamfer tool is a device used for chamfering the outside edge of a pipe.

A chamfer is a bevel cut into the opening of the pipe for easier assembly.

8. Thread Gauge

A thread gauge measures the pitch, diameter, and angles of threaded objects, such as screws, bolts, and small pipes. You can typically check the internal and external threads of objects, making the thread gauge useful for matching pipe fittings.

There are two main types of thread gauges – leaf gauges and ring gauges. Leaf gauges resemble Swiss army knives with a series of leaves that extend from the tool. Each leaf has cutouts for measuring the pitch and diameter of threads.

The ring gauge is used to solely measure external threads. It cannot measure internal threads but offers greater precision compared to leaf gauges.

9. Inclinometer

Inclinometers measure the slope, tilt, and elevation of objects. Most digital inclinometers include a gravity sensor to monitor elevation changes. The sensor detects when the elevation increases or decreases, allowing it to analyze changes in the slope of an object.

3. Infrared thermometer

An infrared thermometer scans a surface and reports results without having to make any contact at all. These thermometers have become extremely popular since the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020.

For example, your dentist may require you to come in masked and scan your forehead before you can be treated. Because a fever can indicate that you are a risk to other patients and office staff, this scan from a distance is critical to public health.

Such thermometers can also be used to have significant effects in industrial applications. For example, large copper pots, often used in industrial cooking and brewing, can easily be scanned by an infrared thermometer to ensure the safest temperature range has been met.

However, it should be noted that these are surface scans. An infrared thermometer cannot safely read containers with an insulating layer.

4. Liquid crystal thermometer

A liquid crystal thermometer is used to gauge the temperature of a surface. If you have ever used a forehead strip to check a child’s temperature, you may have waited for the black crystals to change color and give you an effective reading.

It should be noted that liquid crystal thermometers check the surface temperature rather than the internal temperature. These tools are also quite popular among home brewers and those that need to maintain a steady internal temperature of a cooking pot, such as those culturing their own yogurt. 

As a general rule, it is recommended that these tools be used in conjunction with another thermostat for checking body temperature, as they could be more accurate.

For example, a high fever, read by a liquid crystal thermometer in a forehead strip, could indicate a much more dangerous situation.

It’s also common for these thermometers to be used to measure water temperature in a fish tank. These strips can easily be stuck on the outside of the aquarium glass and the change in color will represent the water temperature.

5. Thermocouples

Thermocouples include the connection of 2 different types of metal. When heat passes from one metal to the next, an electric charge is created, and a reading is produced. Thermocouples are often used in applications that humans cannot safely access, such as industrial ovens.

Because the reading is of an electrical charge rather than an actual temperature, thermocouple temperature sensors can be used over a long distance.

For example, the readings gained from thermocouples can reduce the risk of foodborne illness in cooking and cleaning industrial ovens. Industrial food production that requires in-place cleaning, such as large mixing containers, can also be checked via thermocouple data.

6. Resistance Temperature Detectors

To make a resistance temperature detector, you must work with a metal with either very little or no resistance at a stable temperature. As the temperature changes, the resistance of the metal changes.
