Knowing the bolt pattern of a vehicle is important if you are looking to buy a new car or purchase wheels for your existing vehicle.
Not all vehicles have the same bolt pattern and it can be frustrating if you buy a new set of wheels and they don’t fit on your car.
Not only is it crucial to know the actual bolt pattern but it’s also great to learn how to measure the bolt pattern of your vehicle as well.

What does bolt pattern mean?
Bolt pattern is also known as the “lug pattern” or “bolt circle” and refers to a 2 number system that measures the layout of the mounting holes on a wheel.
It is the diameter of a circle drawn through the center of each of the wheel’s bolts. The first number indicates the number of total bolts and the second number indicated the diameter of an imaginary circle that is formed around the bolts.
For example, a 6 x 120 bolt pattern indicated that there are 6 lug bolts used and the diameter of the circle made through the center of the bolts is 120 mm.
How to measure bolt pattern
It’s quite simple to measure the bolt pattern for a wheel. Most bolt patterns will have either 4,5,6,8 lugs.
The 4,6, and 8 lug wheels can be measured by measuring the distance from the center of a lug hole to the center of a lug hole that is directly across from it.
Measuring the 5 lug wheels are slightly different. In this case, you need to measure the distance from the back of one lug hole to the center of a lug hole that is across from it.

Are 5 x 115 and 5 x 120 the same?
This is a common question as some people may want to fit a 5×115 lug pattern on a 5×120 lug pattern vehicle. The answer is they are not the same size and will not center and fit properly. There is an option to have the wheels redrilled or you can purchase a wheel adapter kit.
5 x 120 bolt pattern in inches
Normally bolt patterns are measured in millimeters. But you can easily convert mm to inches by using a conversion table or calculator.
5 x 120 bolt pattern equals 5 x 4.72 in inches.
