Weight Of Golf Cart Batteries Explained

It’s important to choose the right sized battery for your golf cart as this can greatly affect its performance.

Unlike cars and other vehicles that mainly use a 12-volt battery, golf carts can use either a 6 volt, 8 volt, or 12-volt lead-acid battery.

Golf carts can also use either a 36 volt or 48-volt Lithium-Ion battery.

Depending on the battery size, the weight can vary as they are not all the same.

Continue reading to learn more about golf cart battery weights and why it’s crucial for every golf cart owner to know this information.

How much does a golf cart battery weigh?

Lithium-Ion batteries

You should know that not all batteries designed for golf carts weigh the same. Depending on the brand, model, and size, the weight can vary from 15-40 pounds with the average weight being around 30 pounds.

It’s possible for certain Lithium-Ion batteries to weigh above 40 pounds but they are not overly common.

Lead-acid batteries

Lead-acid batteries are considerably heavier than Lithium-Ion batteries. Most lead-acid batteries will weigh double the weight of Lithium-Ion batteries and sometimes even more.

Types of golf cart batteries

There are 2 types of batteries used in golf carts.

  • Lithium Ion
  • Lead acid

Lithium-Ion batteries are the clear favorite for golf cart owners as they have many benefits. Many owners should consider swapping out their lead-acid battery for a Lithium-Ion battery if possible.

These benefits include:

  • Increased weight to performance capacity
  • Maintenance free
  • Faster charging
  • Less weight
  • Longer lifespan
  • Same performance regardless of charge
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Cost savings over time

Although a Lithium-Ion battery will cost more upfront, there will be cost savings over time.

Lead-acid batteries are commonly used in golf carts as well, but many companies are moving over to Lithium-Ion.

As mentioned above, there are several disadvantages to using a lead-acid battery on a golf cart.

The traditional lead-acid batteries for golf carts are still used but perhaps on the way out as more and more golf cart brands switch over to Lithium-Ion.

How much does a 6-volt golf cart battery weigh?

What are the dimensions of a golf cart battery?

The Duracell Ultra 6 volt battery has the dimensions of 10.25 inches long x 7.125 inches wide x 10.875 inches high.

The Dakota Lithium-Ion battery has the dimensions of  9.5 inches long x 6.9 inches wide x 9.5 inches high. This battery only weighs 16.5 pounds which is ¼ of the weight of some lead-acid batteries.

Why does the weight of a golf cart battery matter?

The weight of the battery used in a golf cart is important when considering the cart’s overall performance.

A lighter battery is going to reduce the overall weight of the cart giving it a better weight to performance ratio

At a lighter weight, the golf cart can reach higher speeds much easier than a heavier weight.

If the battery is lighter, this will allow for more passenger weight and therefore increase its carrying capacity.

How long does a golf cart battery take to charge?

A Lithium-Ion battery will charge up to 5 times faster than a lead-acid battery. You can expect them to fully charge within 2 to 4 hours compared to 8 to 10 hours for the lead-acid battery. This is one of the huge advantages of using a Lithium-Ion battery.
