With the high cost of gas these days, buying a heavy vehicle like a pickup truck might not be everyone’s first choice.
But if you are in the market for a new or used pickup truck, knowing the actual weight of the truck is important.
Not only for fuel economy reasons, but for towing and payload limits, bridge and road weight limitations, and more.
This article will show you the weight of various pickup trucks on the market.

Average Pickup Truck Weight
Pickup trucks vary in size, make, and model. Not all trucks weigh the same and there are many factors that can influence the overall weight.
On average, a pickup truck weighs between 4,000 – 9,500 pounds depending on its class. This is known as curb weight. When comparing half-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton trucks, half-ton trucks weigh the least and 1-ton trucks are the heaviest. Depending on the make, model, and features of the truck, the weight can vary.
Gross weight
The gross weight or GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), is the weight of the pickup truck including passengers, cargo, and anything else you can put in it. It’s the maximum certified weight of the vehicle.
For example, your pickup truck may have a curb weight of 4,200 pounds with a gross weight of 7,000 pounds. This means that the pickup truck has a payload capacity of 2,800 pounds.
GVWR – curb weight = payload.
7,000 – 4,200 = 2,800.
If you are not sure what the payload capacity of your truck is, most times you can find it in the owner’s manual.
You can also find the GVWR of the truck by looking at the sticker on the driver’s side door jam.
Factors that affect a pickup truck’s weight
As mentioned, there are many factors that go into determining a pickup truck’s weight. Depending on the make, model, and features of the truck, the weight will vary.
The following items are factors that affect a pickup truck’s weight.
- 4×4 vs 2×4. The 4-wheel drive trucks will almost always weigh more.
- Engine size. Larger engines weigh more than smaller engines.
- Heavy-duty trucks will weigh more than regular trucks.
- Cab and bed size. Trucks that have extended cab and bed sizes will weigh more than standard-size trucks.
- Trim level. A truck that is fully loaded with extra features will weigh more than a base model truck.
- Tire size. Larger tires and rims typically weigh more than smaller ones.
- Any additional parts or add-ons made to the truck will make it heavier.
As you can see, although you may have 2 trucks that are the same model, for example, a Ford F150, they can each weigh different amounts.
