It can be frustrating to figure out the size of something that is 2 inches long when you don’t have a way to measure it.
2 inches is a small measurement that is commonly used to describe the length of something.
Without a measuring tape or ruler, it can be challenging to guess the length of 2 inches.
Comparing items of similar size or comparing measurements to the size of other objects is a great way to get a sense of how big something is.
It’s also very helpful to compare 2 inches with the size of objects when explaining how big an item is.
For example, if you have a men’s wallet and know it’s 4 inches wide, you can say that 2 inches is half of the wallet size.
Here are other items to use when comparing the size of 2 inches.
One third the size of a pen
Most people are familiar with the size of a pen.
Although not all pens are the same in length, on average they are close to 6 inches long.
If you divide a pen into 3 equal parts, each section would be 2 inches long.

2 Hockey pucks
Hockey pucks that are used in ice hockey leagues are 1 inch tall.
The great thing about using a hockey puck as a size reference is the puck is universal in size and they are all the same.
If you place 2 hockey pucks one on top of the other, they would equal 2 inches tall.

Half the width of a golf hole
If you are a golf player, you will be familiar with the size of the holes placed on the greens.
In professional golf leagues, all holes need to be the same size which is 4.25 inches in diameter.
So although it’s not exactly 2 inches, if you reference half of the width of a golf hole, it will be close enough to get an idea.

2 Loonie coins
If you live in Canada or have traveled there, you are most likely familiar with the Loonie coin.
The Loonie is a one-dollar coin that has a value of $1.
The width of this coin is 26.5 millimeters or 1.04 inches.
If you place 2 of these coins together, they would equal close to 2 inches long.

A pink eraser
The pink eraser is very common to see in offices, schools, and many households.
These erasers are made out of rubber and are used to erase pen or pencil marks on paper.
Most pink erasers are 2 inches long and are a great reference of something that is exactly 2 inches in length.

AA battery
Batteries are sold in a variety of sizes and shapes.
The AA battery is in the shape of a cylinder and is generally all the same size.
Most AA batteries are 1.94 inches long and can be used as an example of something that is 2 inches long as they are only 0.06 inches smaller than 2 inches.

A lime
Limes are a common citrus fruit that is round and green in color.
They are available in most farmer’s markets and grocery stores.
Lemons and limes are often confused as they are close to being the same size.
Although a lime can vary slightly in size, on average limes will be around 2 inches in diameter.

An egg
Eggs are not all the same size and can be purchased in sizes ranging from small to jumbo.
In the USA, you can actually buy an egg that is peewee size which is smaller than a small egg.
For this example, I will reference a medium-sized egg which is normally around 50 millimeters in length.
50 millimeters is 1.96 inches long and although the egg might not be exactly this length, it will be very close and can be used as a reference for something that is 2 inches long.

4 Thumbtacks
A thumbtack is commonly used in offices, schools, and other places to hold pieces of paper to a board.
They are very short but sharp pins that are 0.5 inches in length.
If you placed 4 thumbtacks together in a row, they would equal right around 2 inches long.

To summarize, the following objects can be used to reference the length of 2 inches.
- One third length of a pen
- 2 hockey pucks
- Half width of a golf hole
- 2 Loonie coins
- A pink eraser
- AA battery
- Diameter of a lime
- One medium egg
- 4 thumbtacks
