Knowing some average living room dimensions can make shopping for new furniture much easier.

Average Living Room Sizes

Although home sizes can differ greatly, the size of most living rooms is surprisingly similar.

Whether you have a two or three-bedroom family home, a one-bedroom apartment, a condo, a split-level, or a bungalow, your living room will probably be between 300 and 400 square feet in total.

Newer homes tend to have slightly smaller living rooms, on average, than older houses.

The exact dimensions of a living room vary depending on the shape of the house and the placement of the rooms.

A living room that’s about 15 feet wide and 20 feet long, plus or minus 2 feet from either measurement, is the most common.

This is the size and shape of a living room in most family homes, including larger condos or apartments.

If you have a small apartment or home, your living room might be smaller as well. Small living rooms are often around 130 square feet in size, and most living rooms of this size are 10 feet by 13 feet, give or take a couple of feet.

Living rooms in one-bedroom apartments or bungalows are sometimes even smaller and can be as little as 70 square feet in size. These living rooms usually measure 10 by 7 feet.

Mobile homes often have slightly different room dimensions than other houses, as they are generally much longer and more narrow than a traditional home or even an apartment.

Most mobile home living rooms are also a bit smaller than living rooms in other houses and usually measure between 150 and 160 square feet.

Tiny homes are smaller than mobile homes or even studio apartments. Despite this, their living room size can be surprisingly large.

Many tiny homes have living rooms that are around 180 square feet in size. However, this room is often multi-use and may also be used as a dining room, kitchen, bedroom, or all of these rooms at once, depending on what has been folded down or tucked away.

Tiny house living rooms that double as the kitchen might have counter space, a sink, and appliances along one wall. These rooms might also include a folding table or a couch that turns into a bed.

Because of this, these rooms can often have limited space even though the square footage isn’t that small.

What size couch will fit in my living room?

A standard sofa is usually around 7 feet long. A couch of this size will fit in almost any average living room, even if that space is in a one-bedroom apartment, a condo, or a bungalow.

If you live in a studio apartment or your living room is only about 70 square feet, however, you might want to choose a loveseat instead.

A full-sized sofa will take up almost an entire wall in a small living room, and you may not have room to place an end table or lamp.

A loveseat, on the other hand, has only two seats, compared to a standard sofa’s three. These smaller couches are usually just over 4 feet long, making them ideal for a smaller space, such as a tiny home or a small apartment.

What coffee table should I choose for my living room?

Coffee tables are available in a wide range of sizes, so choosing one that fits your living room shouldn’t be an issue.

In general, a good rule of thumb to follow is to choose a coffee table that’s at least half as long as your couch. Most coffee tables are between 4 and 4.5 feet long, which is ideal for a full-sized sofa.

If you have a small living room, you might want to consider a round or square coffee table instead of an oval or rectangular one.

Round and square coffee tables are usually a little bit smaller, so they’ll fit better in a smaller space. These table shapes also work well for L-shaped couches, as everyone on the couch can reach the table.

Will a fireplace fit in my living room?

Like any other furniture, fireplaces vary in size. Most are about 31 inches tall and 44 inches wide, and they usually have a depth of just over 1 foot.

Because they’re not very wide, a fireplace can fit well into almost any living room unless that room is a multi-use space like you might find in a tiny house or a small apartment.

You’ll also need to consider how big you want the fireplace surround to be. A grand mantle and surround can spread another foot on either side of the fireplace, which means it might be too big for a small living room.
