Choosing the right size tennis racquet is important and with so many different racket sizes to choose from, it can be difficult to make the right choice.

Tennis racquets are made with different materials and sizes to suit players of all levels, ages, and sizes.

I have put together a list of 5 things that you should know about tennis racquets and size that will help you pick the right one for you.

What size tennis racquet do I need?

Adults will normally use a racquet size of 26 – 27 inches. Although other sizes are available, the most common size is 27 inches.

If you are a new tennis player, you should use a racquet that is lighter in weight. Lighter racquets are easier to use and you will be more accurate when hitting the ball. As you advance and become more comfortable with the game, you can choose a racquet that is slightly heavier.

Different sizes of tennis racquets

Tennis racquets are available in sizes from 19 inches to 29 inches long. The shorter racquets are generally used by kids with the longer ones used by adults.

Racquet head size is also available in different sizes from 95 – 110 square inches. While smaller racquets allow for better control, the larger rackets will provide more power.

Tennis racquet grip size

Tennis racquet grips are measured in 1/8″ and there are 6 different sizes normally used. The grip size is the distance measured around the outside of the handle. Also known as the circumference. This distance is measured in inches.

The “L” ranking system is used to detail grip size.

  • L0 – 4″
  • L1 – 4 1/8″
  • L2 – 4 1/4″
  • L3 – 4 3/8″
  • L4 – 4 1/2″
  • L5 – 4 5/8″

Tennis racquet size for kids

Kids tennis racquets come in 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 26-inch sizes. Depending on your child’s height, choose the right size racquet based on the following chart.

Another way to determine the proper size racquet for your child, is to have them hold the racquet in their swinging hand. Hold the racquet at the base and point the head towards the ground with their arm straight down by their side. The racquet should be about 1″ off the ground. If it touches the ground, the racquet is too long. If the racquet head is more than 2″ off the ground, it is too short.

What is the biggest tennis racquet allowed?

As mentioned, most adult tennis players will use a 27 inch long tennis racquet.

If you are a professional player or playing competitive play, you should know that there is a maximum racquet size of 29 inches.

Providing your racquet is under this length, you will be following the size rules.

Many adult tennis players will use a 27 inch long racquet.
