When you’re getting ready to cook a box of dry pasta, it can sometimes be challenging to figure out how much to add to a recipe or what amount is right for a serving.
Knowing how much dry and cooked pasta weighs can help you better estimate how much to cook.
How much does dry pasta weigh?
In general, 1 cup of dry pasta weighs about 4 ounces or 125 grams. Pasta that weighs this much includes short or medium-length shaped pasta, such as penne, macaroni, elbows, or fusilli.
It’s easiest to measure these pasta types in a cup because they’re short and don’t need to be broken to fit into the cup for a correct measurement.
When it comes to long pasta, such as angel hair, fettuccine, or spaghetti, you’ll want to measure by holding the pasta in a bundle and looking at or measuring the diameter of the circle it makes.
Four ounces or 125 grams of pasta should have a diameter of about 1 inch. Another way to estimate this is to create a bundle of pasta that’s, at the end, about the size of a quarter.
How much does cooked pasta weigh?
Cooked pasta usually doubles in volume, so 1 cup of dry pasta will make about 2 cups of cooked pasta.
How much the pasta weighs, however, depends on exactly how it was cooked and how much water it took in.
If you prefer your pasta al dente, it will weigh about 2.25 times what the dry pasta weighed. If you prefer to cook it to a slightly softer texture, the cooked pasta will weigh about 2.4 times what the dry pasta weighed.
This means that if you want to cook 1 cup of pasta, the end result of about 2 cups will weigh about 9 ounces or around 255 grams if it’s cooked al dente and about 9.6 ounces or 272 grams if it’s cooked to a slightly softer texture.
We can use this information to compare the difference in weight between a cup of dry pasta and a cup of cooked pasta.
A cup of dry pasta, as we know, weighs about 4 ounces or 125 grams, and a cup of cooked pasta will weigh between 4.5 and 4.8 ounces or between about 127.6 and 136 grams.
What is a good amount for a pasta serving?
How much pasta you should make for a serving depends on what else you’re eating and how many calories you want to take in.
In general, a pasta serving is given as 2 dry ounces, which is about 1/2 of a cup when the pasta is dry and about 1 cup when the pasta is cooked.
A cup of pasta is between 155 and 190 calories, depending on how it has been cooked. Al dente pasta will have taken on slightly less water, so you may be able to fit more pasta in a cup, as the pasta hasn’t expanded.
This means that al dente pasta will generally have more calories than softer pasta.
What is pasta made of?

A cup of vegetable pasta, for example, might weigh more than a cup of semolina pasta, but it depends on exactly what ingredients are in the pasta and how much water it takes on during cooking.
