With so many different TV sizes on the market, choosing the right size for your space can be difficult and confusing.
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a TV, is it’s actual dimensions.
Measuring your intended space and knowing the TV dimensions prior to purchase can save you money, time, and frustration.
Many popular TV sizes on the market today include a 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch.
Not very often do we consider buying a 50-inch TV. But there are several 50-inch TV’s available and they are great for someone who wants a large TV but doesn’t have the space for a 55-inch or larger TV.
So in this article, you will learn the exact dimensions of a 50-inch TV along with some other important information about TV sizes in general.
Dimensions of a 50-inch TV
It’s important to know that not all 50-inch TV’s have the same dimensions. The measurements can vary slightly based on the make and model of the TV.
On average, a 55-inch TV has dimensions of 45″ wide x 29″ tall x 2″ deep. These measurements are for the TV only and do not include the stand or hanging hardware.
When a TV manufacturer markets a new TV as 50 inches, they are referring to screen size. Screen size is different from the actual dimensions of the TV. The screen size of a 50-inch TV is the size of the TV screen measured diagonally from corner to corner.
The actual width, height, and depth of the TV is not 50 inches.

You will need to take into consideration the size of the TV frame. Today’s newer TV’s have very small frames that average around 1″ – 2″ wide with some being less than 1″ wide.
I recently purchased an new LG 75-inch TV and was surprised to see the frame width is only 0.75″ as you can see in the following image.
Regardless of the TV you choose, the frame thickness is always included in the TV dimensions.

50-Inch TV dimensions including the stand
As mentioned, the dimensions provided for a TV are normally based on the TV itself not including the stand. The TV stand can add up to 10″ in depth and 4″ – 6″ in height on some TV’s. Of course, this can vary depending on the model of TV and stand being used.
If you plan to wall mount your TV, you won’t need to consider the stand size.

How far should I sit from a 50-inch TV?
There are a few things to consider when determining how far away from your TV to sit or viewing distance.
The size of the TV and it’s screen resolution, type of program you are watching and the viewing environment are all things to factor in when calculating viewing distance.
According to Sony.com, the recommended viewing distance for a high-definition TV is 3 times the height of the TV. For a 4K resolution TV, the recommended viewing distance is 1.5 times the height of the TV.
For example, let’s consider the Sony X85K 50-inch TV mentioned above. This TV has a height of 25.5 inches, therefore you should sit 76.5 inches away from the TV.
25.5 inches x 3 = 76.5 inches.
As the Sony TV does have a 4K screen resolution, adjust the viewing distance if watching in 4k.
If your TV is smaller, you can sit closer and if the TV is larger, you should sit further away.
