11 Items That Weigh More Than A Ton (Shocking List)

It’s not every day that you will see something that weighs more than a ton.
A ton is a unit of weight that equals 2000 pounds in North America.
When we think of something that weighs over a ton, we normally picture very large and bulky items.
I have put together a list of items that weigh at least 1 ton that I think you will find very interesting.

1 ton equals 2000 pounds or 907.18 kilograms.
Midsize car
You may not think that a mid-size car weighs more than a ton but most of them do. A mid-size car is one that has a maximum length of 196.8 inches and has between 110-120 cubic feet of space. On average, these cars weigh over 3300 pounds which is 1300 pounds more than 1 ton.
Of course, smaller cars will weigh less and larger cars will weigh more.
An example of a mid-size car that weighs over a ton is the Toyota Camry.
Shipping container
Shipping containers are not the same size and therefore can vary in weight.
Both the 10 foot and 20-foot long shipping containers weigh over 1 ton when empty.
The 10-foot container weighs around 2500 pounds and the 20-foot container weighs over 4000 pounds which is more than 2 tons.
Male Giraffe
Giraffes are known as being the world’s tallest animal.
A full-grown giraffe can reach up to 18 feet tall with its neck equalling ⅓ of that size.
Females can grow up to 14 feet tall and reach 1500 pounds.
The male giraffe tends to be larger than the females and can weigh between 2600-3000 pounds.
Orca (Killer Whale) dolphin
The Orca is also known as the killer whale and is part of the dolphin family.
The Orca is very popular and is actually found in every ocean in the world.
These marine mammals are known for their white and black markings and both the females and males can weigh well over a ton.
The males are generally heavier than the females and can weigh up to 6 tons.
Walrus
Another large marine mammal is the Walrus.
The Walrus is known for its huge tusks and whiskers.
The Pacific Walrus is very large and like other mammals, the males weigh more than the females.
On average, females can reach up to 2700 pounds and males can reach 3700 pounds.
Both weigh over 1 ton.
20 Foot travel trailer
The 20-foot travel trailer is one of the more common sizes that people use for camping.
The weight of these trailers can vary for each manufacturer with the empty weight and maximum weight being important considerations before purchasing.
Most 20-foot travel trailers will weigh over 1 ton.
Actually, many trailers over 16-18 feet will weigh over a ton.
But on average, a 20-foot travel trailer will weigh around 2500 pounds when empty.
24 Foot pontoon boat
The weight of pontoon boats will vary based on their size.
Of course, the larger the boat is, the heavier it will be.
On average a pontoon boat will weigh around 75 – 100 pounds for every foot of length.
A 24-foot long pontoon boat will weigh just over 2000 pounds or 1 ton.
A cubic yard of gravel
Gravel can be weighed in cubic yards.
A cubic yard is an area covered by 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet which is 27 cubic feet.
If you have 1 cubic yard of gravel, it will generally cover 324 square feet at a depth of 1 inch.
Pea gravel is commonly used for driveways and other areas around the home and 1 cubic yard will weigh between 2400 – 2900 pounds.
This weight is measured when the gravel is dry as it would weigh more when wet.
A Cord of wood
A cord of wood is measured at 128 cubic feet or 8 feet long x 4 feet wide x 4 feet tall.
When discussing the weight of a cord of wood, you need to consider a few variables.
Every cord of wood will vary in weight based on the type of wood being used and whether or not the wood is dry or wet.
Of course the dryer the wood is, the less it will weigh.
The moisture content of the wood can add up to 1000 pounds to the overall weight.
But on average, a standard cord of wood will weigh between 2000 – 3000 pounds which is over 1 ton.
Hot tub
There are many different sizes of hot tubs available today and for the most part, the larger hot tubs will weigh more than the smaller ones.
Larger hot tubs will hold more people than smaller ones and will weigh much more once water and people are added to it.
A 3 to 4 person hot tub will weigh around 500 pounds when empty but close to 3000 pounds once filled with water depending on the amount of water it can hold.
Dumpster
A dumpster is commonly used as a rental when cleaning up your yard or moving to a new location and you need to get rid of waste.
Dumpsters are available in a variety of sizes from 10 – 30 cubic yards and their weight will increase as they go up in size.
For example, a 10 cubic yard dumpster has a weight of 4000 – 6000 pounds or 2 – 3 tons.
The 30 cubic yard dumpster can weigh 8000 – 12000 pounds of 4 – 6 tons.
